The building was intended to bring together different branches of humanities, which were previously scattered throughout the campus, and to provide space for several nascent research centres. As well as housing the Humanities and Education Research Centre on two floors of the purpose-built accommodation, the Berrick Saul building is also home to:

  • The Institute for Effective Education
  • The Centre for Modern Studies
  • The Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies
  • The Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past
The building provides high-quality workspace for Arts and Humanities research postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers, as well as offices for distinguished visiting fellows, and accommodation for research projects, interdisciplinary centres, and emerging research groups. The university hopes the Centre will create a hub for Arts & Humanities activities on campus, hosting international colloquia, seminars and conferences.
